Jaipur: The Central Government has recently passed a new Hit and Run Bill in the Parliament. This bill has also received the approval of President Draupadi Murmu. Now this has become a new law under the Indian Judicial Code. However, the provisions that have been added to this new law are being opposed across the India. In hit and run case, if the driver absconds after the accident and if someone dies in an accident, then there is a provision of imprisonment for ten years for the driver. There is a provision to pay fine along with the punishment. Drivers are protesting against the provision of strict action against drivers in the new law.
What is Hit and Run
Hit and run simply means that the driver runs away from the spot with the vehicle after an accident. If someone is hit by a vehicle and instead of helping the injured, the driver runs away with the vehicle, then such cases are counted as hit and run. According to the old law of hit and run, in such cases the driver used to get bail and there was a provision of maximum punishment of two years. Many times we see that if the person who causes the accident takes the person injured in an accident to the hospital on time, his life is saved. However, the case of fleeing from the spot after an accident is called hit and run. Strict provision has been made in such cases.
Opposition to strict action against drivers in new law
According to the new provisions of the Hit and Run law in the Indian Judicial Code, if the driver absconds without informing the police after the accident, he will be punished with 10 years of imprisonment. Along with this, heavy fine will also be charged. Truck, trailer, bus, public transport and taxi drivers across the country are opposing this stringent provision. In many states of North India, protests are taking place against this new law and highways are being blocked.
Central government add such strict provisions, Why?
Accident statistics show that every year 50 thousand people die in the India in hit and run cases. In view of these figures of deaths, strict provisions have been added to the new law to make the drivers stricter.
Well in front and ditch in back for drivers
Drivers protesting against the new law say that if they flee the spot after an accident, they will be sentenced to 10 years in prison. If they stop at the spot, the mob will attack them and thrash them to death. It was a situation of well in front and ditch in back for the drivers. It is also true that sometimes the angry crowd turns violent and the matter takes the form of mob lynching.
Congress opposed the new law
The strike has been called by All India Motor Transport Congress in protest against the new road law. Many commercial vehicle organizations have come out in support of this. AIMTC demands that the provision of ten years’ imprisonment made by the government in the hit and run case should be reconsidered.
Former Transport Minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas has called the new law anti-people and anti-constitutional. He said that the new law is a violation of the basic rights of drivers. The Rajasthan government had made legal provisions in the interest of drivers to reduce deaths in road accidents. A reward of Rs 5,000 was started for the person who took the person injured in the accident to the hospital. The previous Congress government had made such provisions that if a vehicle driver takes an injured person to the hospital, no action will be taken against that vehicle.
